Jon Stewart urges Democrats to stop 'trotting Schumer out' to respond to Trump

Jon Stewart says Chuck Schumer isn’t the most effective messenger in combating President Trump’s rhetoric, urging Democrats to quit frequently turning to the Senate minority leader.

“Democrats, can you please stop f—ing trotting Schumer out there every time Trump traverses into the unreal?” Stewart said Monday while hosting Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.”

“He’s not good at this,” Stewart said, after playing a clip of the New York Democrat reacting to weighty tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China that Trump had announced over the weekend.

On Monday, Trump paused the threat of 25 percent tariffs against Canada and Mexico for one month.

“It’s going to affect beer, most of it — Corona here — comes from Mexico. It’s going to affect your guac. Because what is guacamole made of? Avocados,” Schumer said on Sunday while railing against the tariffs and their potential impact on Americans’ wallets.

“Your response to the trade war is to f—ing tell us guacamole is made of avocados?” Stewart exclaimed.

“What is the decision-making process here?” he asked Democrats.

Imagining a meeting among Democratic operatives, Stewart said, “Hey, who should we get out there to effectively battle one of the most savvy presidential media manipulators in history? How about Schumer? He’s uninteresting, but at least he’s monotone.”

Stewart also cracked of the 74-year-old lawmaker, “And Chuck, before you go out there, you look too young. Put on these readers and lower them on your nose.”

A spokesman for Schumer didn’t immediately return ITK’s request for comment.

“Honestly, listening to Chuck Schumer speak on almost any topic,” Stewart told his audience, “makes me want to bomb Canada.”
