After losing the first set at 3, Skatov, turning as hard as rubber, held out even when stretched in the second set. Down 4-5, he ended a 19-stroke rally with a spectacular forehand cross-court pass to save a match point. On 5-6, he saved two more match points as the Briton made a couple of unforced errors.

Mochizuki, after losing the the first set, made it 2-all after being 0-2 in the second. Up 5-4, he saved a game point with a forehand cross-court volley and, with a couple of unforced errors from his opponent, broke to secure the set.

He made it 3-all from 1-3 down in the third-set tie-break, but erred for his opponent to save a match point on 6-5.

Tough conditions

“It was really hot and humid outside. So, it was really tough, both physically and mentally. I’m really proud of myself to have won this match, because I saved one match point and fought till the end,” said Jacquet, who dropped a set for the first time in the tournament.
