‘Back to the Future’ writer to fans asking for 4th movie: ‘F–k you’

Doc Brown couldn’t have predicted this reaction.

Bob Gale, who co-wrote and produced all three “Back to the Future” films alongside co-creator Robert Zemeckis, isn’t looking to revive the time travel franchise with a fourth project.

After being asked about the possibility of a “Back to the Future 4,” Gale jokingly told Yahoo Entertainment, “People always say, ‘When are you going to do ‘Back to the Future 4?’ And we say, ‘F–k you.’”

The first sci-fi flick, “Back to the Future,” premiered in 1985 followed by “Back to the Future Part II” in 1989.

The 73-year-old noted that the trilogy has already inspired many spin-offs, including a Broadway musical and a stage production on Royal Caribbean Cruises.

“Back to the Future: The Musical” opened on Broadway in Aug. 2023 after it debuted in London’s West End. The play won the Laurence Olivier Award for best new musical in 2022.

The show wrapped its Broadway run last month with 500 performances and $80 million worth of ticket sales, per producers.

“So, my God, ‘Back to the Future,’” Gale added at the 52nd annual Saturn Awards in LA on Feb 2. “I’m going to be doing it for the rest of my life.”

The films starred Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson.

And while Gale isn’t looking to mess with what they built, he did reveal that he’s helping Fox, 63, pen a book about his experience with the movies.

The book is called “Future Boy,” but no other details have been disclosed.

In 2023, Fox told Variety that there’s no need for a fourth movie or for a reboot, but joked: “Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already.”

“I don’t think it needs to be,” the actor mused. “I think [Zemeckis has] been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”

“Back to the Future” will celebrate its 40th anniversary in July.

Zemeckis appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and was asked if Universal Pictures begs him “every couple years” to make “Back to the Future 4.”

He teased that the studio checks in “every six months,” which was “just an exaggeration.”

“You know, we have to say, ‘There are different things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But to remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a ‘Back to the Future 4,’ it just isn’t in the cards,” Zemeckis continued in Oct. 2024. “I would like to do the ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ [movie]. I would love to do that. I think that would be great. I floated that out to the folks at Universal. They don’t get it. So, [there’s] nothing I can do.”

But Lloyd, who played mad scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown, is more open to reprise his role.

“I would love to do a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and [producer Steven] Spielberg felt that they told the story in the three episodes,” the 86-year-old told Variety in May 2023. “But if somebody has a brilliant idea that would justify a fourth film it might happen.”
