French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat has revealed that she turned down the opportunity to direct Marvel’s Black Widow in favor of pursuing her own vision with The Substance. In a recent interview with Variety, Fargeat shared that after the success of her 2017 film Revenge, she was considered for the Marvel blockbuster but declined, prioritising creative control over studio constraints.

Despite being in a financially precarious situation at the time, Fargeat chose to write The Substance on spec, allowing her to maintain complete artistic freedom. The gamble paid off — her body horror film has not only earned widespread critical acclaim but also secured a spot in this year’s Best Picture Oscar lineup.

Marvel’s search for a Black Widow director saw them courting multiple acclaimed filmmakers, including Lucrecia Martel, Chloé Zhao, Melanie Laurent, and Deniz Gamze Ergüven. However, concerns over limited directorial autonomy led several of them, including Martel and Fargeat, to walk away. Martel later expressed disappointment in Marvel’s approach to filmmaking, citing poor sound design and lackluster visual effects.

Other than the coveted Best Picture, The Substance is nominated for Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay and Best Makeup and Hairstyling at this year’s Academy Awards.
