How are Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley returning to ‘Scream’ franchise?
What’s your favorite scary movie?
Turns out, “Scream” is back with some familiar Ghostfaces.
“Scream 7,” the next installment in the horror franchise, is set to hit theaters next year — and some bombshell casting news has dropped.
Matthew Lillard, 55, who played Ghostface killer Stu Macher in the original “Scream,” is returning to the series. The actor confirmed the news on Instagram, posting a quote from his character in the 1996 flick: “My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!”
Followers flocked to the comments section, freaking out over the comeback of Stu.
One die-hard fan quoted Stu’s famous line from the first film, writing, ““Ya see Sid, everybody dies but us, everybody dies….. but us. We get to carry on and plan the sequel.. Cuz let’s face it baby.. THESE DAYS… YA GOTTA HAVE A SEQUEL!!”
Another fan chimed in, “SIR HOLD UP HUH?? U CANT DO THIS AND SAY NOTHING,” while a third commented: “Our king returns to the screen as he always said he’d be right back!!!”
Despite Stu seemingly dying in the first movie, there has been a long-standing fan theory that he secretly survived, a sentiment that “Scream VI” poked fun at.
But Lillard has yet to detail what capacity Stu will be seen in — whether he is still alive or if he will be shown through flashbacks, or another form.
After all, Stu’s best friend and fellow late killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), made a surprise cameo in the 2022 “Scream” revival. Loomis appeared in hallucinatory visions for his daughter Samantha Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera.
Deadline also reported that former Ghostface Scott Foley is back for “Scream 7.”
The 52-year-old played Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) half-brother Roman Bridger in “Scream 3.” Roman was shot in the head at the end of the 2000 movie.
Campbell, 51 — who dated Lillard after meeting on the Wes Craven-helmed franchise — will be returning, too. She dropped out of 2023’s “Scream VI” due to a salary dispute, with the film playing it off as Sidney being busy taking care of her family.
“I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled!!!” Campbell, 51, shared via Instagram last year.

Meanwhile, Courteney Cox, who has starred in all six “Scream” films, will reprise her role as reporter Gale Weathers. Mark Consuelos, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, and Isabel May round out the cast, with May reportedly playing Sidney’s daughter.
Consuelos confirmed his cameo during an episode of “LIVE with Kelly and Mark” earlier this week.
“Is that what you’ve been doing behind my back?” Kelly Ripa joked with her husband.
“I had the most amazing time,” Consuelos gushed.
“You are the killer right? Do you die?,” Ripa responded, to which the actor quipped: “I can’t tell you anything!! Don’t try… to get it out of me.”
“But you’re probably the killer right?” the talk show host pressed.
“I can’t tell you anything,” Consuelos repeated. “I can’t even look at you!”
Jenna Ortega, meanwhile, will not be turning to the franchise due to scheduling conflicts with Season 2 of Netflix’s “Wednesday.”
Barrera, who played Jenna’s sister Sam in “Scream” (2022) and “Scream VI” (2023), was let go from the horror movie franchise over social media posts she made about the Israel-Hamas war.
In November 2023, “Scream 7” director Christopher Landon reacted to the shake-up, posting on X: “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”
While Dermot Mulroney — who played Detective Bailey in “Scream VI” — told the Post he’s “not surprised” by their exit, he also praised the fandom for sticking by the movies after all the ups and downs.
“Those ‘Scream’ people who have rode out all that’s gone on — not just in the last couple of years, but for the last 25 years with this storyline,” Mulroney expressed. “I’m so grateful to be a part of it. It’s way more powerful than I ever thought. It binds families together. The horror viewer follower-ship fan scape is so powerful that I know more and more from being part of ‘Scream.’”
Directed by Kevin Williamson and written by Guy Busick, “Scream 7” is set to hit theaters on Feb. 27, 2026.
