John Candy’s son made a cameo in Ben Affleck’s Dunkin’ Super Bowl ad
A Candy man cameo.
John Candy’s son Christopher made a brief appearance in Ben Affleck’s Dunkin’ Super Bowl commercial, surprising viewers as well as other actors in the ad.
Christopher was a featured member of the “burger chain gang,” as he confirmed in an interview with TMZ on Tuesday.
“It was just kind of in the flow of normal commercial auditions,” the actor said of how he booked the gig. “At the time, I knew it was for Dunkin,’ but I didn’t actually put together that it was a Super Bowl spot.”
Christopher learned that he got the job on New Year’s Eve, though filming was delayed as a result of the Los Angeles fires.
It became clear to Candy that the commercial was intended as a Super Bowl ad when he arrived on set and noticed “all of this high-level security, and they’re putting these stickers on the back of your phone.”
That is when he realized, “‘Oh, this is a giant Super Bowl spot,’” he added.
Candy also praised Affleck’s directing skills, sharing that he did “a great job,” adding, “It was really fun to watch him work.”
“Super sweet guy, really lovely,” Christopher said of Affleck, who he got to meet briefly despite having his hands full with starring in the commercial in addition to directing it.
And though Candy tried to keep a low profile, after some of his fellow burger chain gang members learned who he was, they couldn’t help but gush over his late dad, who passed away at the age of 43 in 1994.
“We were chatting about my father and they were just super big fans,” Christopher recalled. “It was nice to trade stories with them.”
Candy reflected that his father would have been proud of him for landing a spot in the Super Bowl.
“I can only imagine he would be going, ‘I’m glad you’re working,’” he quipped.
But, he noted, “I’m going to have to go country line here and say he was probably more of a Tim Hortons fan than a Dunkin’ fan.”
John was born in the Canadian province of Ontario, which is also where Tim Hortons was founded.
A documentary on the late comedic star produced by Ryan Reynolds, Colin Hanks, and Reynolds’ company Maximum Efforts is currently in the works with the full participation of the Candy family, per People magazine.
“With John Candy trending, I’ll just say I love him,” Reynolds shared in October 2022 via a post on X, then known as Twitter. “So much so, @maximumeffort is working on a documentary on his life with @colinhanks. Expect tears.”
Candy’s name started trending in anticipation of the “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” 4K re-release.
