As the quietly charming and melancholic Betty Cooper, Khushi made her debut in the coming-of-age film The Archies (2023), alongside a bevy of newcomers, and star kids much like her. In her second film Loveyapa, she is on different terrain, as the lead in a romantic-comedy in a vastly different setting.

While Indian cinema has been obsessed with all things big, bad, violent and action-packed, Khushi’s first two films have been anything but. “I have always loved rom-coms and I feel like I am subconsciously gravitating towards films that I grew up watching,” says Khushi, actor Janhvi Kapoor’s younger sister. While she is quick to add that she is keen on exploring other genres, she acknowledges how it has been fulfilling for her, to start working in projects she felt she had a strong natural connection with.

A remake of the 2022 Tamil blockbuster filmLove Today starring Pradeep Ranganathan, Ivana, and Sathyaraj, Loveyapa stars Khushi Kapoor alongside actor Junaid Khan. The duo play a young couple who find their relationship threatened after her father insists they put their trust to the test through a mobile phone exchange for a day. The daughter of producer Boney Kapoor and actor Sridevi, who has a dazzling filmography in Tamil, Khushi’s decision to star in the remake of a Tamil film does not come as much of a surprise.

“My dad actually asked me to watch the original because he loved it so much. I loved the story too. It is fun, relevant and speaks about a really important topic — social media and how it affects every relationship. I was immediately drawn to it,” says Khushi.

Khushi plays Baani in the film and the actor says the role felt challenging to her given how different she is in real life. “There are also different nuances I had to keep in mind. I am from Mumbai and Baani is from Delhi, and I had to emulate her style and the way she speaks,” Khushi says.

Loveyapa is also her co-star Junaid Khan’s second project, after the Netflix film Maharaj. Despite coming from film families (Junaid is actor Aamir Khan’s son), the pair met for the first time only when they were signed on for the film. “We are very similar people when it comes to how we approach our craft. We believe in many rehearsals and practice, and like being aware of how our scenes are going to play out,” she says.

In a family studded with actors and producers, we ask Khushi if their conversations are dominated by her choices in the early stages of her career. “I live with my father and Janhvi, so I immediately go to them for advice. I value their opinion and experience, and definitely do not make any big decisions without consulting them,” she says.

Among the current crop of newcomers in Bollywood, Khushi is regarded as somewhat of a fashionista. Her style is fresh, young, and keeping in with all that is currently in vogue. Watching her mother Sridevi and Jahnvi style themselves and get ready, Khushi says, got her interested in fashion but it wasn’t something she thought about much until the last few years. “When I began acting in films and started making public appearances, I was really shy and fashion gave me a sense of confidence. I noticed how my stride was different when I dressed up well, and I began to enjoy this process,” she says.

With the year just having begun, what is on Khushi’s 2025 wishlist? “Audience appreciation, hoping that whatever work I put out gets loved…whatever I am doing is obviously for the audience and I hope that they accept me,” she says.

Loveyapa releases in theatres on February 7
