Netflix dissociates from Karla Sofia Gascon amid ‘Emilia Perez’ controversy

Netflix is taking steps to distance itself from Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón following backlash over resurfaced social media posts deemed Islamophobic and racist. The controversy has significantly impacted the film’s Oscar campaign, leading to changes in promotional strategies and Gascón’s absence from key industry events.

Gascón, who made history as the first openly transgender performer nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, was initially scheduled to attend several major awards ceremonies, including the Critics Choice Awards and the Directors Guild of America Awards. However, Netflix has now withdrawn financial support for her travel and styling, leaving her to cover her own expenses should she choose to attend.

Sources reveal that Netflix and Gascón’s PR agency, The Lede Company, have ceased direct communication with her, now coordinating only through her UTA representative. Meanwhile, the studio’s For Your Consideration campaign has noticeably minimized her presence, opting instead to highlight co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz. The film’s title and images of Gascón have also been notably absent from recent promotional materials.

While some Oscar voters remain unfazed by the controversy, others believe it could significantly impact the film’s chances.

With only weeks remaining in the awards season, the fate of Emilia Pérez at the Oscars remains uncertain. Netflix has yet to confirm if Gascón will attend the ceremony, but her presence could risk further overshadowing the film and it remains to be seen whether Emilia Pérez can weather the storm.
