The teaser of the Tamil coming-of-age drama, Bad Girl, presented by ace filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Vetri Maaran, has received polarising opinions from netizens.
The teaser, released on Sunday, shows a young woman’s (played by Anjali Sivaraman) coming-of-age story, from her early days in high school to her college days and beyond. We see how her transparency about her new-found sexual desires prompts her male classmates to slut-shame her, while her fellow girlfriends call her a ‘despo’. The reality of her misogynistic world truly hits her when she gets into a relationship in college.
On one hand, some, like filmmaker Pa Ranjith, lauded the makers for the portrayal of women’s struggles in a misogynistic society. “Director #VetriMaaran deserves immense credit for backing such a daring story. The film powerfully portrays women’s struggles and society’s expectations through a unique new wave cinema style. (sic)“ wrote Ranjith while sharing the teaser.

However, the teaser didn’t bode well with some sections of the audience, especially for writing the protagonist as a girl from a Brahmin household.
Director Mohan G, best known for making films like Draupathiand Rudra Thandavam, reshared Ranjith’s tweet and slammed Vetri, Anurag, and Ranjith, all of who he claims are part of a ‘clan.’
“Portraying a brahmin girl personal life is always a bold and refreshing film for this clan. What more can be expected from vetrimaran, Anurag kasyap & Co.. Bashing Brahmin father and mother is old and not trendy.. Try with your own caste girls and showcase it to your own family first. (sic)“ he wrote.

Written and directed by Varsha Bharath, Bad Girl also features Shanthi Priya, Saranya Ravichandran, Hridhu Haroon, TeeJay Arunasalam, Sashank Bommireddipalli.
This project marks the Tamil debut of National Award-winning music director Amit Trivedi, who has composed six songs for the movie. The film has cinematography by Preetha Jayaraman, Jagadeesh Ravi, and Prince Anderson, and editing by Radha Sridhar.
Bad Girl will have its world premiere at the 54th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, from 30th January to 9th February 2025, where it has been selected to be a part of the prestigious Tiger Competition. Vetri also produces Bad Girl under his Grass Root Film Company banner.
